Public Health Officials Want to Help Reduce the Pet Population:
Commissioners meeting 10am on Tuesday September 25 in the Commissioner's
Courtroom, will decide whether the county moves to reduce the sale of
unhealthy pets. Judge Emmett has expressed the sentiments of the Health
Department regarding the need to protect both the animals and the general
public from unlicensed individuals selling sick or inbred animals at
roadside stands who can then disappear without consequences.
Austin lawmakers recently passed legislation allowing officials in larger
Texas counties, including Harris, to implement such bans prohibiting sale
of live animals on public property and right-of-ways in unincorporated
sections such as northwest Harris County. A County spokesperson said this
is an issue in every precinct along major roads on the weekends where a
vendor typically sells from the back of a truck with make-shift pens.
The ban and enforcement would begin October 1, and violators would be
subject up to a $500 fine for the misdemeanor charge with tickets being
written immediately. Desired results are less animal over-population and
fewer unresponsible breeders of pets and other sick animals.
